The Methods

I have developed a teaching technique I call GuitarSmart! It is based on over 20 years of research and experience in teaching the guitar. The method is custom tailored to suit the student's needs and is grounded in 4 basic ideas:
Developing Physical, Mental, Spiritual, and Aural strength and awareness
Through a number of exercises that are appropriate to your level of development, I will work with you to improve your awareness of the physical elements required for guitar playing and to improve their strength. We will develop your mental capacity for quick, clear learning and memory retention to help in understanding concepts and remembering the music you'd like to learn. Since music is at its heart a spiritual endeavor, we will also address getting in touch with inspiration in whatever way seems best to you. We will also address fine-tuning of the ear so you can accurately hear what you and others are playing.

Understanding and Applying Basic Western European Music Theory
Living where we do, the dominant structure of most of the music we listen to is largely based on the principles laid out by Western European music. Even Rock, Folk, Hip Hop, Metal and other popular forms can be better understood by applying some of the basic ideas of Western music theory to them. I believe that everyone who wants to understand the nuts and bolts of how the music we listen to fits together needs at least a little bit of knowledge here. It allows you to decipher what's going on and to write your own music. I have devised a means of learning through doing whereby we use music theory to write your own music. We will learn keys, chords, notes, scales and the relationships between all of these elements.

Developing Intrinsic Enjoyment of the Process of Learning
I don't believe in rewards beyond the joy of learning and doing music. To this end, no certificates will be issued, no candy will be distributed, no awards beyond the joy of music. I consider the kindling of an intrinsic interest in the subject as the most important role of the teacher and strive to pass my love of music onto my students.

Application of the above ideas to the guitar
The application of the above elements to the guitar will be determined on a student-by-student basis. I have a series of pieces to develop note reading skills for those interested in learning to read music on guitar. I have a series of exercises dedicated to learning chords and chord progressions for those who wish to learn some chord strumming. You will find that the basic concepts of playing guitar apply to any style and once you learn these basic concepts, you can do with them what you will.
